What is the Link Between Allergies and Ear Infections?

Ear infections, or otitis media, are common, especially among children. It is the second most common pediatric diagnosis in the emergency department after respiratory infections. However, they don’t just occur in children.

There are several causes of ear infections, and due to the interconnecting nature of the ears, nose and throat, allergies can also predispose people to ear infections.

Allergies and Ear Infections

The Eustachian tube is a small tube running from the middle ear to the back of the throat. Mucus, fluid or other germs can become blocked in the tube, leading to an ear infection. Congestion and inflammation can cause the tube to become blocked. A common symptom of allergies, both food and environmental, is congestion.

Ear infections are also often viral, resulting from infections that also cause illnesses resulting in congestion, such as a cold.

Treatment For Allergies and Ear Infections

Avoiding your allergens is the primary treatment for allergies. If you feel significant allergy symptoms after trips to Cooper River Park, you may also consider antihistamines. Antihistamines such as Zyrtec® or Claritin® may be used to treat allergy symptoms. Your doctor can assist you with the correct treatment options for you.

There is currently no evidence to support that antihistamines to treat allergies can be used to prevent ear infections. Allergy treatments will not improve ear infections themselves; treatment is needed for ear infections.

Ear infections without a fever will often resolve themselves. Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen can be used for pain management. If you’re having frequent ear infections or infections accompanied by a fever of 102 degrees, you should see a doctor.
