Household Bugs Are More than Just a Pest—Some May Cause Hearing Loss

You probably already know that advancing age and exposure to loud noise can cause hearing loss. But did you know the creepy crawlies in your house can, too? Below we review how certain household bugs can cause hearing loss and how to protect yourself.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs, from the family Cimicidae, are a pest that can be found throughout the world. While they mostly cause skin problems, according to one study, there is precedence for ear-related problems (otitis) in some patients. The article states, “A patient presented with complaints of right ear irritation for several days’ duration. A foreign body was lavaged from the ear canal, which proved to be an engorged nymphal form of Cimex lectularius [bed bug]. The parasite had apparently obtained a blood feed from the tympanic membrane [eardrum].”

When buying used furniture, check carefully for bedbugs. With your furniture at home, consider investing in protective covers to eliminate hiding spots and vacuum frequently. If you suspect you have bedbugs, call an exterminator immediately.

Cicadas

Cicadas are bugs from the family Cicadidae that emerge from the ground every 13 to 17 years. While they’re not around for long, when they are, they produce noise upwards of 100 dB, which is close to the volume of a motorcycle revving or a jackhammer in operation. This level of noise can cause permanent damage to your auditory system in as little as 15 minutes.

Fortunately, most of the time, cicadas are found outdoors, but that doesn’t mean they can’t enter your home. If you live near where cicadas are found, cover any cracks or crevices in your home, and if you find one inside, remove it promptly.

Toxoplasma Gondii

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that can cause toxoplasmosis, which is a condition linked to hearing problems. You can experience this illness if you eat contaminated or undercooked meat or if you are exposed to pet waste and don’t practice good hygiene after.

You can prevent exposure to this pest by keeping meats refrigerated and/or frozen until you’re ready to eat them, investing in a good meat thermometer to ensure food is cooked through and washing your hands after cleaning your cat’s litter box.
