Advanced ENT & Allergy Offering Food Oral Immunotherapy Posted on February 11, 2022 by Advanced ENT & Allergy Up until a few years ago, the only treatment for food allergies was strict avoidance of foods that one is allergic to. Recently, allergists have developed a new treatment called oral immunotherapy (OIT). This is a novel treatment in which the food allergen is slowly introduced to the patient in very small quantities daily. This is done with a very strict protocol under the guidance of an allergist with very precise dosing of the specified food. How OIT Works With OIT, patients are required to make frequent office visits for new doses of the food. Most patients can tolerate the food that they are allergic to after 9-12 months of therapy. Overall, OIT can be very effective, though it may vary based on the specific type of food, according to reports from the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology. Our food allergy specialist and director of the Food Allergy Treatment Center at Advanced ENT & Allergy, Dr. Shashank Sheth, welcomes new patients for evaluations for food OIT at our Voorhees and Mount Laurel locations. We’re more than happy to help patients tolerate the foods that they are allergic to and lead a better quality of life! For more information or to schedule an appointment, call us today!
