Advanced ENT & Allergy Offering Food Oral Immunotherapy

Up until a few years ago, the only treatment for food allergies was strict avoidance of foods that one is allergic to. Recently, allergists have developed a new treatment called oral immunotherapy (OIT). This is a novel treatment in which the food allergen is slowly introduced to the patient in very small quantities daily. This is done with a very strict protocol under the guidance of an allergist with very precise dosing of the specified food.

How OIT Works

With OIT, patients are required to make frequent office visits for new doses of the food. Most patients can tolerate the food that they are allergic to after 9-12 months of therapy. Overall, OIT can be very effective, though it may vary based on the specific type of food, according to reports from the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology.
