Some popular rideshare apps, which are used to schedule your rides, offer assistive features that can improve your experience if you have hearing loss. Some features include in-app visual and vibrating alerts that let you know when your ride has arrived, as well as if your driver has sent you a message. Contact your preferred rideshare provider before making your travel plans to inquire what other features they offer.

Tell Your Driver About Your Communication Preferences

Once you’re in the vehicle and after you confirm your name and destination, tell your driver about your communication preferences. You may be able to request to sit in the front seat so you can turn to read their lips when they talk to you, or you can bring along a tablet for them to communicate with you when they’re not driving. Some rideshare apps allow you to set a preference about whether or not you want your driver to talk to you during the ride.

Ask Your Driver to Turn off the Radio

A lot of rideshare drivers turn on music, so they’re not driving in silence or in order to set an ambiance. However, if background music is going to make it hard for you to communicate with them, you can ask them to turn it off or turn it down.

Visit Your Audiologist

If you are experiencing hearing loss and haven’t yet sought treatment, know that they can improve your communication ability, including with your rideshare drivers. Modern hearing aids can be programmed for many different environments, including inside vehicles.
