When you think of technology that helps those who are hard of hearing, the first thing you think of is probably hearing aids. But did you know that you can incorporate technology into your home to make it safer and more convenient? We review some of these options below.

Specialized Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Fires can spread rapidly, and carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless – meaning both can pose an extreme danger. Unfortunately, most alarm systems are designed with hearing people in mind. That said, there are smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on the market with a strobe light or vibration feature that are well-suited for people with hearing loss.

Alarm Clocks

Because you don’t wear your hearing aid or cochlear implant while sleeping, you can’t rely on an audible alarm to be woken up. Like with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, you can choose a model that uses light or vibration to wake you up. Lighted alarm clocks are usually the brightness of a camera flash, so you should be able to see it with your eyes closed, and vibration models can be put under your pillow.

Doorbells

It’s important to know when someone is at your door. If a doorbell doesn’t work for you, you can purchase a model that is connected to a light somewhere in your house, a pager you carry around, or even your phone.

Phones

While you may be able to stream audio from your cellphone to your hearing aids to listen to your conversation partner, some people find there is not enough amplification or they simply prefer to have a landline. Fortunately, there are several options. Amplified phones, as the name suggests, amplify your conversation partner’s voice without sacrificing sound quality. Captioned telephones provide live captions of the person on the other end on a large display. Many of these phones also use visual alerts or vibration to get your attention so you know someone is calling.
