It occurs in around 10% of patients with chronic lung disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How It\u2019s Categorized<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are generally three ways to categorize hemoptysis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Scant hemoptysis <\/strong>describes when a small amount of blood is found in the saliva and mucus. It may look like streaks.<\/li><li><strong>Mild to moderate hemoptysis <\/strong>describes blood volume averaging less than a half a cup per 24 hours.<\/li><li><strong>Massive hemoptysis <\/strong>describes blood volume averaging up to one quart per 24 hours.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Causes It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many possible causes of hemoptysis, ranging from mild to severe. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Pneumonia<\/li><li>Bronchitis<\/li><li>Fungal infection<\/li><li>Tuberculosis<\/li><li>Cancer<\/li><li>Pulmonary embolism<\/li><li>Blood thinning medications such as Coumadin (warfarin), Eliquis (apixaban), Plavix (clopidrogel) or Xarelto (rivaroxaban)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How It\u2019s Diagnosed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Notify your health care provider right away if you experience any amount of hemoptysis so you can be evaluated.
