To kick off the celebration, we\u2019re reviewing the history of Audiology Awareness Month below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History of Audiology Awareness Month<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/advancedent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-02-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Audiometry exam - Hearing test - Audiologist - Audiometer - Ear test\" class=\"wp-image-5203\" width=\"323\" height=\"214\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audiology.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Academy of Audiology (AAA)<\/a> established Audiology Awareness Month as a national event in 2008 in order to promote public awareness of <a href=\"https:\/\/advancedent.com\/audiologist\/hearing-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing loss<\/a> induced by noise as well as how to prevent it and protect our hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Academy serves as a collective voice within the field of audiology and is the world\u2019s largest professional organization of, by and for audiologists. They are committed to advancing the science, practice and accessibility of hearing and balance health care. Their mission is to provide quality hearing care services through professional development, education, research and increased public awareness of hearing and balance disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facts About Hearing Loss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following facts about hearing loss are from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/quick-statistics-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Approximately 37.5 million American adults, or 15% of the population, report some trouble hearing.<\/li><li>Nearly 30 million people in the United States ages 12 and older, or 13% of the population, have hearing loss in both ears based on standard hearing exams.<\/li><li>About 2% of American adults ages 45 to 54 have disabling hearing loss; this increases to 8.5% for adults ages 55 to 64, 25% for adults ages 65 to 74 and 50% for adults 75 and older.<\/li><li>Around 28.8 million American adults could benefit from hearing aids.<\/li><li>Between two and three out of every 1,000 babies are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears.<\/li><li>More than 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What You Can Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/deafness-and-hearing-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a> reports that over 1 billion young adults around the world are at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices. To protect your hearing, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Follow the 60\/60 rule. <\/strong>This rule applies to when you\u2019re listening to music or other media through headphones or earbuds.
