Tinnitus is a ringing, roaring, hissing, whistling, buzzing or humming sound in the ear with no external source. The sound may be quiet and intermittent or loud and constant. Some people experience tinnitus only when they are somewhere quiet, like their home, while others experience it in loud public places like Zinc Cafe; everyone experiences tinnitus differently. The American Tinnitus Association reports that over 50 million people suffer from tinnitus.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for tinnitus, but there are treatments available. One that has been shown to be effective is Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT).

TRT is a process of learning to cope with tinnitus on both a subconscious and conscious level. It entails undergoing counseling sessions with a hearing professional known as an audiologist and sound therapy.

Counseling

The first step in TRT is to have a consultation appointment with an audiologist, during which they’ll ask you about your symptoms and conduct a medical exam. It may be the case that there’s an underlying problem causing your tinnitus that can be addressed medically.

After your consultation, counseling will begin. During these visits, your audiologist will review the results of your initial evaluation, talk to you about how your auditory system works, demystify tinnitus in general and help change your negative thinking patterns about your tinnitus. They’ll also start the sound therapy process.

Sound Therapy

For the sound therapy portion, you’ll wear a masking device, which looks similar to a hearing aid, except instead of amplifying noises, it plays noises in your ear. Usually, the noise is white noise played at a volume just below that of your perceived tinnitus. The purpose of this is to decrease the contrast between the perceived sound and played sound in your brain, making the perceived sound less bothersome.

How Effective It Tinnitus Retraining Therapy?

According to a study published in the journal HNO in 2015, “The effectiveness of TRT has increased significantly during the past 25 years, presumably due to changes incorporated in its implementation. The main improvement has been to shorten the average time until seeing clear improvement from 1 year to 1 month, with a statistically significant improvement seen at, and after, 3 months.”
