Is there anything more relaxing than a dip in the lake, sunbathing in a lawn chair and cooking smores over the camp fire at Camp Kettle Run? Of course not. In fact, research shows that spending time outdoors is linked to increased cognition and better mood.

If you have hearing loss, there may be some extra steps involved in preparing for your next camping trip. We review some tips and other hearing resources below.

Have a Dry Spot for Your Hearing Aids

Wet gear is never fun, but wet hearing aids can be a disaster. Even hearing aids with a protective Nano-coating aren’t 100% waterproof. To prevent your hearing aids from getting rained on or splashed, all you need to bring is a good quality, sealable plastic bag.

Pack Cleaning Tools

You can expect to get dirty when you go camping, especially if you have a long trip planned, but one thing you should keep clean is your hearing aids. If dust infiltrates your devices, it can cause damage, and blockages can impact sound quality. Be sure you bring your cleaning kit and use it at the end of each day.

Beware of Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight and excessive heat are other sources of damage to hearing aids. When you’re not wearing your devices, keep them somewhere cool and shady. When you are wearing them, we recommend also wearing a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off them.

Bring a Good Light Source

Many people with hearing loss rely on visual cues. This can be challenging at nighttime unless you have a good flashlight or lantern.

Rely on Other Senses

If your hearing loss prevents you from being aware of danger, like an animal nearby, be sure to pay attention to sights and smells that can alert you, like tracks and feces.

Communicate Your Whereabouts

This is an essential tip no matter if you’re experienced, have perfect hearing or not. Let others know where you’re going, how long you’ll be there and when they can expect to hear from you. Don’t rely on having cell service to communicate this information.
