Like the thyroid, the parathyroid is a group of neck glands (four total) that produces hormones essential to regulating the body’s calcium. When the glands produce an overabundance of parathyroid hormone, the result is too much calcium, a condition known as hyperparathyroidism. This is often caused by an adenoma, a type of benign tumor. Parathyroid surgery is often recommended following a diagnosis since surgery is safe and can cure you in just minutes. Most people exhibit no symptoms of this condition. Usually, it is picked up incidentally on routine lab work. Despite not being aware of the problem, the disease is working in the background pulling calcium from your bones and causing damage to your kidney. The most common symptoms are fatigue, memory loss or “fog”, worsening anxiety/depression, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, joint pain, muscle aches and bone pain. Sometimes, these symptoms resolve within hours on the day of the operation.
