Otosclerosis is a familial disease that causes conductive hearing loss. The hearing loss usually starts in young adulthood and progresses over time. It tends to accelerate during pregnancy. It is caused by an overgrowth of bone causing fixation of the stapes bone in the middle ear. The incidence of this disease has been on the decline and that is thought to be due to the addition of fluoride to drinking water. The condition can be treated with the fitting of a hearing aid or with a surgical procedure known as a Stapedectomy. In this procedure, the stapes bone is removed and replaced with a prosthesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This disease is diagnosed audiometrically and any decision regarding surgical intervention should be based on the audiometric findings and a discussion with an otolaryngologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
