Tonsillitis and adenoiditis are usually bacterial infections of the tonsils and adenoids and are more common in children and young adults. The most common bacteria that can infect the tonsils and adenoids are a form of strep. Treatment requires a course of antibiotics, hydration and medication to control fever. If left untreated, some cases of tonsillitis can progress to a peritonsillar abscess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When tonsillitis or adenoiditis recurs frequently in a short period of time, your doctor may recommend surgical removal of the tonsils and or adenoids (T&A). In some cases, recurrent infections can cause enlargement of the tonsils and adenoids enough to obstruct the upper airway. When this happens, obstructive sleep apnea may occur. Surgery to remove enlarged tonsils and adenoids is recommended in these cases. Your otolaryngologist will be able to determine if you or your child is a candidate for this surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
