Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Our team can directly visualize your child\u2019s swallowing structures while they are eating and drinking utilizing FEES. During the FEES procedure, our ENT physician passes a thin, flexible camera through your child\u2019s nose to examine the throat. This enables our team to see how the various parts of the throat and airway work during swallowing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A FEES allows our clinicians to make a precise diagnosis and identify a treatment plan for infants and children with swallowing disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pediatric Feeding & Swallowing Center<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Feeding and Swallowing Center at Advanced ENT & Allergy<\/strong> <\/strong>evaluates, treats and offers follow-up care and support for infants and children with feeding and swallowing difficulties. We utilize a multidisciplinary approach consisting of a speech-language pathologist and a fellowship trained pediatric ENT physician to provide comprehensive care to each child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Symptoms of a feeding or swallowing disorder can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- \n
- Poor weight gain<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Refusal to eat<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Long feeding times<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Coughing or gagging with eating<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Congestion with eating<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Frequent upper respiratory illnesses<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Only eating small amounts<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Pain or distress when eating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Voice Disorders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Abnormal changes in the voice are called hoarseness. When hoarse, the voice may sound breathy, raspy, strained, or show changes in volume or pitch (depending on how high or low the voice is). Voice changes are related to disorders in the sound-producing parts (vocal folds) of the voice box (larynx).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some causes of voice disorders<\/a> may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- \n
- Acute Laryngitis. <\/strong>The most common cause is acute laryngitis swelling of the vocal folds that occurs during a common cold, upper respiratory tract viral infection, or from voice strain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Voice Misuse. <\/strong>Speaking in noisy situations, excessive use, using inappropriate pitch (too high or too low) when speaking and not using amplification when public speaking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Benign Vocal Cord Lesions. <\/strong>Prolonged hoarseness can occur when you use your voice too much, or too loudly for extended periods of time. These habits can lead to nodules, polyps, and cysts<\/strong><\/a>. Vocal nodules (singer\u2019s nodes) are callus-like growths of the vocal folds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Vocal Hemorrhage. <\/strong>Vocal fold hemorrhage occurs when one of the blood vessels on the surface of the vocal folds ruptures and the soft tissues fill with blood. It is considered a vocal emergency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD). <\/strong>A possible cause of hoarseness is gastro-esophageal reflux, when stomach acid comes up the swallowing tube (esophagus) and irritates the vocal folds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Smoking. <\/strong>Smoking is another cause of hoarseness. Because smoking is the major cause of throat cancer, if smokers become hoarse, they should see an otolaryngologist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Neurological Diseases or Disorders.<\/strong> Hoarseness can also appear in those who have neurological diseases such as Parkinson\u2019s or a stroke, or may be a symptom of spasmodic dysphonia, a rare neurological disorder that usually affects only the voice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
